Arthur Rinderknech had not been spoiled by the Acapulco draw when he inherited Casper Ruud, the tournament's No.2 seed.
He logically lost 6-4, 6-3 in 1h37 of play, despite an opening break for the Frenchman in the first set.
Ruud will face the winner of the match between Aleksandar Vukic and Rodrigo Pacheco Mendez in the second round.
