After 2022, he lost a bit of the fire and the confidence that goes with it," says Auger-Aliassime's coach

Frédéric Fontang, Felix Auger-Aliassime's coach since February 2017, has had the time to experience a great many things with his player.
In 2022, the Canadian was in the best form of his career, reaching a world number 6 ranking, with titles notably in Rotterdam and Basel.
However, Auger-Aliassime did not confirm this status afterwards and had dropped out of the Top 10 during the course of 2023.
In an interview given to Eurosport, the French coach explains this decline: "After that 2022 season, he was faced with a major injury, but that doesn't explain everything.
This injury destabilized him in a general way, particularly in his approach to training. He lost a bit of the fire, and the confidence that goes with it.
All of this at least had the merit of making us ask a lot of questions. The advantage is that we remained united during the difficult times. Félix could have thrown it all away, but he didn't.
I have the feeling that nowadays, it's less the trend. Players pay more attention to stability within their structure. With all the knowledge available to us, they know better how to avoid major mistakes.
So the trend is more to reflect and try to progress as a team. It's still better than being in a disposable relationship. And I think that for the future, this will make us stronger.
