After a rollercoaster match, Moutet defeats Medvedev and secures a semifinal spot in Washington
A lucky loser this week in Washington, Corentin Moutet continues his impressive run.
The Frenchman, eliminated in the second round of qualifying, benefited from Holger Rune's unexpected withdrawal to enter directly into the main draw's second round. After victories against Müller and Evans, Moutet faced Daniil Medvedev this Friday in the quarterfinals.
Outplayed in the first set, which the Russian won 6-1, Moutet tightened his game in the second to take it 6-4. The two players went toe-to-toe in the decisive set, but at 5-4 in Moutet's favor, the weather decided to intervene.
Due to thunderstorm and lightning threats over Washington, all matches were suspended for an hour. Upon returning to the court, Medvedev knew he was under pressure as he had to hold serve to stay in the match. He saved two match points in style before finally succumbing on the third after an utterly chaotic rally.
Furious, the world No. 14 hurled his racket toward his bench before the handshake. Moutet, victorious with a score of 1-6, 6-4, 6-4, celebrated the best result of his career, having never before reached the semifinals of an ATP 500. He now awaits the winner between Alex De Minaur and Brandon Nakashima.
