After his defeat in Paris, Fonseca says stop: the Brazilian prodigy ends his incredible 2025 season
At just 19 years old, Joao Fonseca conquered the tennis world in 2025. But after a defeat in Paris and back discomfort, the Brazilian prefers to play it safe and focus on next season.
Beaten yesterday by Karen Khachanov in the second round of the Rolex Paris Masters, Joao Fonseca has chosen to end his 2025 season rather than go to Athens next week.
The young Brazilian, who was playing in Paris just two days after winning his first ATP 500 in Basel, felt pain in his lower back. He will also not defend his chances at the Next Gen ATP Finals in December, despite being the defending champion.
Fonseca thus concludes a year full of success, at only 19 years old. He won his first two titles on the main tour (Buenos Aires and Basel) and broke into the top 30 for the first time, occupying the 28th spot in the world rankings this week.
