Age did not forgive: Wawrinka falls to Marozsan in Shanghai opener

For his return to the Masters 1000, his first since Monte-Carlo this year, Stan Wawrinka (No. 129) was determined to do well. At 40 years and six months old, he became the oldest player to compete in a Masters 1000 since Jimmy Connors in 1993.
However, his legend was not enough: the Swiss player fell to Fabian Marozsan (No. 57) in three sets (6-1, 4-6, 6-4) in the first round of Shanghai.
The Shanghai organizers had granted a wild-card to Wawrinka, aware of the symbolic weight of his presence in the draw. This choice was not innocent: already invited in 2024, the Swiss had been able to electrify the crowd, notably by winning a first-round match despite his physical condition, before being eliminated by Cobolli.
For his part, the Hungarian, a recent quarter-finalist in Beijing, will move on to face American Taylor Fritz in the second round.
