Trapped by Monfils in his opening match in Cincinnati (4-6, 7-6, 6-4), the Spaniard lost his nerve, exploding his racket on the floor in the third set.

Given the 21-year-old champion's usual demeanor, this gesture came as something of a surprise.

Clearly embarrassed, the native of El Palmar made a statement shortly after his defeat: "I apologize because my attitude yesterday (Friday) was not correct and it's something that shouldn't be done on a court.

I'm human, my nerves were on edge and it's sometimes very difficult to control yourself when your heart rate is so high.

I'm going to work to make sure it doesn't happen again. Now it's time to think about New York!"
