Alcaraz congratulates Fonseca on Buenos Aires title

João Fonseca has opened up his prize list on the ATP circuit. After winning the Next Gen ATP Finals in a different format last December, the Brazilian, aged just 18, won his first ATP 250 in Buenos Aires, after a perfect run.
Fonseca beat four Argentinians in five matches, dominating Etcheverry, Coria, Navone and Cerundolo in the grand final (plus Djere in the semi-finals), becoming the first player of the 2006 generation to win a title on the main circuit.
On Monday, these successes enabled him to achieve a career-best ranking of 68th.
Reaction to his triumph was swift. Just minutes after the result, Carlos Alcaraz himself congratulated Fonseca on social networks.
On the X platform (formerly Twitter), the 21-year-old world No. 3 wrote a message addressed to the Brazilian: "Impressive João, congratulations," wrote Alcaraz.
The two men's early careers have a few points in common, with a victory at the Next Gen ATP Finals (the Spaniard triumphed in this tournament in 2021) and a first title on the circuit having taken place on clay (Umag 2021 for Alcaraz, Buenos Aires 2025 for Fonseca).
All of which perhaps augurs a confrontation between Carlos Alcaraz and João Fonseca in the near future.
With a current ranking of 68th, Fonseca has in any case opened the way to the Grand Slam's main draw without having to go through the qualifying rounds.
Next up for him is the Rio tournament this week, where he will have to defend the points from his quarter-final appearance last year.
