Alcaraz Expected to Confirm Withdrawal from Madrid Tournament in Press Conference
Time is running out for Carlos Alcaraz. Injured in the adductors during the final of the ATP 500 tournament in Barcelona against Holger Rune last week, the Spaniard is still uncertain about participating in the Madrid Masters 1000, which has already begun.
With his opening match scheduled for this Saturday against Yoshihito Nishioka or Zizou Bergs, the world No. 3 has yet to train since arriving in the Spanish capital. Appearing on a TV show recently, Alcaraz stated that he would only make a decision this Thursday, 48 hours before his first match in the tournament.
However, according to Spanish journalists, pessimism prevails as Alcaraz is set to hold a press conference this Thursday, April 24, at 12:30 p.m., where he is expected to announce his withdrawal from the 2025 edition of the Madrid tournament.
A two-time Madrid champion in 2022 and 2023, Alcaraz was defeated in the quarterfinals last year by eventual winner Andrey Rublev on the clay courts of the Mutua Madrid Open. As a result, he will likely be unable to defend his points this year.
