An ankle injury and a withdrawal from Beijing: Monfils pulls out of the Chinese tournament
Gaël Monfils' season is taking a bad turn with a series of defeats and an ankle injury. The forced withdrawal from the Chengdu tournament deprives him of a tournament that will take place in the coming days.
Gaël Monfils is in a delicate period. The 39-year-old Frenchman, who had a very interesting start to the season, has been clearly struggling for several months.
The world’s 52nd player has lost eight of his last ten matches (including the last five), and was also forced to withdraw during his entry match in the ATP 250 tournament in Chengdu.
At the end of the second set, the Frenchman fell and injured his ankle, and then threw in the towel a few games later against Alexander Shevchenko. As a result of this injury, Monfils will not be able to compete in the ATP 500 tournament in Beijing next week.
This withdrawal benefits Fabian Marozsan, who had already entered the draw in Tokyo, but who should now head to China. Monfils is the third player to withdraw from Beijing after Tsitsipas and Bautista Agut.
