Andreescu, Injured in the Ankle, Withdraws Before Facing Andreeva in Montreal

Bianca Andreescu, who has been no stranger to injuries throughout her career, faced another stroke of bad luck in the first round of the WTA 1000 in Montreal. After earning a match point against Barbora Krejcikova, the Canadian suffered a left ankle injury but still managed to finish the match a few points later (6-3, 6-4).
In tears after her victory, the 25-year-old Andreescu will, however, be unable to continue her home tournament. The 2019 US Open champion, who has not recovered from her injury, has been forced to withdraw just before her scheduled match against Mirra Andreeva in the third round on Center Court.
As a result, the Russian, ranked 5th in the world and already exempt from the first round, will now enter the competition only in the third round, facing either McCartney Kessler or the winner of the match between Maya Joint and Leylah Fernandez.
For the world No. 187, this marks another setback. After climbing back into the top 100 last May, she will not gain further confidence from this tournament.
Defeated in the first round by Lesia Tsurenko last year at the Canadian Open, Andreescu—who began her 2025 season in Rouen in April—has not secured back-to-back wins in the same tournament since 's-Hertogenbosch last month, where she lost in the quarterfinals to Elena-Gabriela Ruse.
