At just 17, Andreeva eliminates the last remaining French player and reaches the quarter-finals at Roland-Garros!
Mirra Andreeva is amazing. Having celebrated her 17th birthday in April, she's already qualified for the quarter-finals.
Up against the last French player in the competition, Varvara Gracheva, the young Russian produced a match of the highest level (7-5, 6-2 in 1h32). Buoyed by a quality first ball (5 aces, 71% of points won behind her first serve) and outstanding court coverage, Andreeva will now discover the Grand Slam quarter-finals. On the other side of the court, Gracheva has nothing to be ashamed of. Ranked 88th in the world this week, the Frenchwoman had a great tournament, culminating in her victory over Sakkari, ranked 6th in the world, in the first round. Very combative, but powerless, she leaves the tournament with honors.
In fact, the honors go mainly to Andreeva. Ranked 291st in the world in January 2023, it took her just a year and a half to make her debut on the circuit. After shining at the Madrid 2023 tournament, this year is the season of confirmation. Eighth finalist at the Australian Open and quarter-finalist in Madrid, she continues her inexorable rise.
With this victory, she will break into the world's top 30, as she will be ranked at least 30th on Monday. To extend her Parisian dream, she'll have to overcome quite a mountain: Aryna Sabalenka, world No. 2 and finalist in Madrid and Rome.
