Auger-Aliassime Upsets Zverev in the Third Round of the US Open

Félix Auger-Aliassime delivered one of the standout performances of the night at Flushing Meadows. In the third round of the US Open, the Canadian defeated the world number 3 in four sets (4-6, 7-6, 6-4, 6-4 in 3 hours and 46 minutes of play).
Prior to today’s match, the German led their head-to-head 6-2 and had not lost to Auger-Aliassime in three years.
Putting on a high-quality performance (50 winners including 10 aces, 4 breaks, and 35 unforced errors), Auger-Aliassime ultimately turned the tables against his opponent.
This early exit for Zverev is a notable event at the US Open. Absent from the 2022 edition due to injury, Zverev had reached at least the round of 16 in each of his last five appearances (2019, 2020, 2021, 2023, and 2024), even making the final five years ago.
This marks another Grand Slam disappointment for Zverev. A finalist in Melbourne and a quarterfinalist at Roland-Garros this year, he exited Wimbledon in the first round and will also miss the second week in New York.
The player who had announced his intention to "spoil the party" for Sinner and Alcaraz in this tournament is still seeking his first Major title and will have to wait until at least 2026 to hope to lift one of the four most prestigious trophies.
A semifinalist in this same tournament in the 2021 edition, Auger-Aliassime returns to the second week of this American Grand Slam for the first time in four years.
Seeded 25th, he eliminated Billy Harris and Roman Safiullin before facing Zverev, who had been one of his toughest opponents (with only two wins in eight meetings prior to today’s match).
For a spot in the quarterfinals, he will face Andrey Rublev, who battled past Coleman Wong (2-6, 6-4, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3). The Russian has only lost once in eight matches against his upcoming Canadian opponent.
