Australian Open director considers extending the Australian Open
Since 2024, the Australian Open has started on Sundays rather than Mondays.
At the time, tournament director Craig Tiley justified this: "We've listened to feedback from players and fans and are delighted to propose a solution that minimizes late finishes, while continuing to provide a fair and equitable schedule."
This year, the Australian Grand Slam broke attendance records.
And its director wants even more, stating that he would like to extend the tournament, starting on Saturday: "We're looking for an experience for the fans and we want to offer them more.
We're going through a boom period in the sport, and more and more people are paying for tickets.
We wouldn't do anything without thinking carefully about the impact it would have on players and fans, but there's an insatiable desire in Australia for more people to watch tennis."
