Basilashvili wins an ATP match for the first time in two years
Nikoloz Basilashvili has pulled off some major coups in the past, as evidenced by his two titles in Hamburg and the one in Beijing. The Georgian is currently ranked 16th in the world.
However, recent years have been more complicated for him. His wife accused him of assault, which he has always denied.
He also had to deal with injuries. He slowly but surely returned to the Future circuit to regain points and places in the rankings.
After qualifying for the ATP 250 in Montpellier, Basilashvili defeated Mikhail Kukushkin, taking advantage of his withdrawal in the third set.
This first-round win marks his first major ATP Tour victory in two years, the last of which came in Montpellier, against Constant Lestienne.
