Begu Announces Taking a Break in Her Career: "It's Not a Goodbye"
Currently ranked 121st in the world, Irina-Camelia Begu will not be present on the WTA tour in the coming months.
Irina-Camelia Begu did not have a stress-free 2025 season, but she did get to taste the joy of a WTA tour title again. Three years later, the Romanian indeed lifted a trophy, the sixth of her career, at the WTA 250 tournament in Iasi. In her home country, the 35-year-old player dominated Jil Teichmann in the final (6-0, 7-5), which allowed her to return to the top 100.
However, this home success remains to this day the last appearance for the former world No. 22 on the main tour. In recent hours, the player who is now ranked 121st by the WTA explained her decision to take a break in her career via a message posted on her social media.
"Hello everyone. After taking some time to reflect, I feel ready to share some important news with you. This year, I had to face health problems and other challenges, and I realized that I needed to listen to my body and take better care of myself.
That is why, after the Iasi tournament, I decided to take a break from tennis, without a specific duration. It's not a goodbye, just a break, and I will be able to focus on my health and well-being.
I am grateful to Victor (Crivoi, her coach) and Lucian (Niculescu, her fitness trainer) for all these years together, for the support, hard work, and memories we have shared. Thank you for understanding my current needs.
I wish you the best in your future collaborations. And to all of you, thank you for the love and support you have shown me throughout this adventure. It means far more than anything I can say," Begu wrote in recent hours on her Instagram account.
