Despite a comeback in the third set, Rouvroy falls to Udvardy in the first round of the WTA 250 tournament in Iasi

Margaux Rouvroy’s journey at the WTA 250 tournament in Iasi has come to an end. Coming through the qualifiers in Romania, the 24-year-old Frenchwoman, ranked 321st in the world, had eliminated two Romanian players—Lavinia Tanasie (1-6, 6-3, 6-2) and Georgia Craciun (0-6, 6-3, 6-4)—to secure a spot in the main draw.
In the first round, she faced Hungary’s Panna Udvardy, ranked 150th in the WTA. Much like her two qualifying matches, the French player got off to a rough start, conceding the first set after 36 minutes of play.
More solid on her service games, Rouvroy easily leveled the match at one set apiece, forcing a decisive third set. Udvardy initially pulled ahead, leading 3-0 and then 30-40 on her opponent’s serve.
It was at that moment that Rouvroy found her rhythm, saving the double-break point before eventually tying the set at 3-3. Riding the momentum, she then broke serve to lead 4-3.
In the end, despite a notable surge of pride in the third set, Margaux Rouvroy—who served for the match at 5-4—couldn’t fully turn the tide. With her back against the wall and forced to serve to stay in the match and force a tie-break, she ultimately succumbed on the Hungarian’s first match point (6-3, 2-6, 7-5 in 2 hours and 16 minutes).
Former world No. 76 Udvardy, 26, secured the win and advanced to the round of 16. To reach the quarterfinals, she will need to defeat Francesca Jones, ranked 104th in the world, who earlier defeated Alicia Herrero Liñana (6-3, 6-2).
Only one French player remains in contention in Iasi: Varvara Gracheva, who eliminated Ana Bogdan (7-5, 6-2) on Monday and will face another Romanian player—either Sorana Cirstea or Mihaela Buzarnescu—in the round of 16.
