Belinda Bencic's Frustration with Journalists: "I Love Being a Mother, But There Are Limits"
Swiss player Belinda Bencic, currently ranked 17th in the world after returning from pregnancy, is fighting to be recognized as a full-fledged athlete. While she dedicates a significant part of her life off the court to her daughter, she expresses her annoyance with intrusive questions from some journalists on the subject.
Returning from pregnancy late last year, Belinda Bencic is gradually climbing back up the rankings. The 28-year-old Swiss player is already back in the top 20 and is seeded in major tournaments.
A former world No. 4 and a Wimbledon and US Open semifinalist, she often travels with her daughter, Bella. While she embraces motherhood, Bencic has also grown frustrated with certain questions about it.
"I try to be as open as possible, to share some things, rather than just answering yes or no. But when I'm asked live on the BBC: 'You're in the semifinals, but do you still change diapers?' I have to respond: 'Could we please talk about my winning match?'
I love being a mother, but there are limits. I don’t answer all the questions—they’re too personal. Of course, motherhood is part of who I am. But I also want to be recognized as a good athlete and a good tennis player," Bencic stated in an interview with Tennis World USA.
