Bencic: "My new mindset would have definitely helped me a lot"
Belinda Bencic is competing at the WTA 500 tournament in Houston, where she will face Sofia Kenin this Wednesday.
During a press conference, the Swiss player discussed her increased maturity, partly thanks to motherhood.
She stated: "I remember before, right after a loss, I would be devastated in my room, replaying the match and thinking about what I should or could have done differently.
Now, when I walk off the court after a defeat, it might just be the best day of my life.
That doesn’t mean I don’t care about tennis; it just means I’m better at separating my work and my personal life.
It’s true that I used to be too emotional, even though I never disrespected anyone.
It was always directed at myself; sometimes, I lost control of my emotions, and I wish I had handled that spiral better.
Now, I approach things differently—my new mindset would have definitely helped me a lot during those moments of frustration, and it might have even helped me win matches.
I’m not proud of any of those moments; in fact, I find it very hard to look back on them.
Today, I wouldn’t even consider throwing a racket; I don’t want Bella (her daughter) to see that."
