After a complicated but encouraging victory over Roman Safiullin in the 1st round on Tuesday (7-6, 5-7, 7-5), Matteo Berrettini continued his fine form on Thursday. The Italian, former world No.6 and Wimbledon 2021 finalist (beaten by Novak Djokovic 6-7, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3), dominated Denis Shapovalov with relative ease (6-4, 6-4).
Injured after the Monte-Carlo Masters 1000, Berrettini had decided not to take part in the French Open. He was hoping to prepare as well as possible for the grass-court season, and his results so far have proved him right. To be confirmed in the quarter-finals against Ben Shelton or James Duckworth.
