Berrettini Withdraws from the US Open

Matteo Berrettini's ordeal continues. Plagued by injuries in recent years, the Italian suffered another setback last May when he was forced to retire in Rome due to abdominal pain during his match against Casper Ruud.
Since then, the world No. 59 has only competed in one tournament—Wimbledon—where he fell in five sets to Kamil Majchrzak (4-6, 6-2, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3). After his defeat in London, Berrettini, who had been seeded on the British grass, admitted he needed to reflect on his future.
"Honestly, this isn’t how I want to be on the court. I need to take some time and think about my future. I have to find another way to stay on the court because it’s starting to weigh on me. My team thought I might feel better here, but it didn’t work out," he said at the time.
In any case, Berrettini won’t be returning anytime soon. Already absent from the two North American Masters 1000 events, the 29-year-old has also withdrawn from the US Open.
A semifinalist at Flushing Meadows in 2019, the Italian still doesn’t appear to be fully recovered. He becomes the third player to withdraw from the 2025 edition after Hubert Hurkacz and Grigor Dimitrov.
Following Berrettini's withdrawal, Brandon Holt, initially awarded a wild card by the tournament organizers, will now take his place in the main draw. Another wild card is expected to be allocated soon, benefiting another player in the coming hours.
