Blown away, Vondrousova praises Swiatek: "She's just too strong".
Marketa Vondrousova is no ordinary player. Ranked 6th in the world this week, she has already achieved several benchmark results, including a Grand Slam title at Wimbledon (2023), a final at Roland-Garros (2019) and a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics (2021). However, against Iga Swiatek in the quarter-finals, she could do absolutely nothing, beaten in just 1h02 (6-0, 6-2).
Swept aside by the undisputed queen of the circuit, the helpless Czech simply declared: "I don't know what to say. She's much better than anyone on clay, especially here. It's very difficult.
I feel that on the court, there's nothing to do or offer. She's just too strong! I didn't feel bad. But in the exchanges, I felt she was just better."
From the world's 6th-ranked player, such an admission of helplessness is almost frightening. In the semi-finals, the uncompromising world No. 1 will face Coco Gauff, world No. 3 and US Open title-holder.
