Bonzi, Suffering from Back Pain, Retires Against Fritz in Madrid

A tough blow for Benjamin Bonzi, who was forced to retire during his third-round match at the Madrid Masters 1000 against Taylor Fritz (6-4, 5-7 ret.).
The Frenchman, whose 2025 season has been challenging so far (with only three wins on the main tour), had regained some confidence this week by successively defeating Cilic and Hurkacz to reach the third round of the Madrid tournament.
Facing world No. 4 Taylor Fritz, Bonzi seemed well on his way to pulling off the day's upset after convincingly taking the first set. However, during the crucial stages of the second set at 4-4, he began experiencing discomfort in his back.
The world No. 62 called for a medical timeout at 5-6 before losing the set on his next service game and ultimately deciding to retire.
Shaken but advancing, Fritz benefits from this twist of fate to move into the quarterfinals, where he will await the winner of the match between Sebastian Korda and Casper Ruud.
