Bordeaux Challenger: Positive Results for the French Players This Wednesday

The conclusion of the first round took place this Wednesday in Gironde as part of the Bordeaux Challenger. Five French players were on the courts, and four of them managed to qualify for the round of 16. This includes Quentin Halys, Hugo Gaston, Calvin Hemery, and Terence Atmane.

Halys, a semifinalist in Dubai in February and currently ranked 52nd in the world (his career-best ranking), defeated qualifier Bernabé Zapata Miralles (6-4, 6-3).

In the next round, he will face Nikoloz Basilashvili, who defeated Albert Ramos-Viñolas (6-2, 6-2). Meanwhile, Hugo Gaston overcame Sumit Nagal (6-3, 6-4) and will now compete in an all-French duel against Terence Atmane.

Back in Europe after several weeks in Asia, where he claimed two Challenger titles in Busan and Guangzhou, Terence Atmane handled his first clay-court match of the season perfectly.

Facing Daniel Galan, ranked 124th in the ATP, the Frenchman won in straight sets (7-5, 7-5), ensuring a French presence in the quarterfinals. Finally, Calvin Hemery delivered a strong performance to defeat Aleksandar Kovacevic (7-5, 3-6, 6-3).

The American, seeded eighth in Bordeaux, is ranked 80th in the world. Hemery, on the other hand, will face Alexander Shevchenko, who had defeated Hugo Grenier the previous day in his opening match.

However, Grégoire Barrère was unable to finish his match. Struggling early on against Lebanese player Benjamin Hassan, the 31-year-old chose to retire (6-3, 3-1 ret.). Hassan will now take on Damir Dzumhur for a spot in the quarterfinals.
