This week, Simona Halep announced the end of her career. After a final defeat on home soil at the Cluj-Napoca tournament against Lucia Bronzetti (6-1, 6-1), the 33-year-old confirmed that she was retiring.
After recurring knee and shoulder injuries and a suspension for doping from the US Open 2022 to Miami 2024, the Romanian's career did not end as she had hoped.
Her former coach, Darren Cahill, who took Halep to the top of world tennis and now coaches Jannik Sinner, gave an interview to Golazo in which he looks back on the end of his former protégée's career.
"I think Simona's retirement came as a surprise to everyone. When I heard the news, it was very moving for me. She's a true champion on and off the court.
Everyone has to stop at some point. Simona has decided to do it now. She chose to finish in front of her fans, it was the perfect scenario.
As far as the doping case is concerned, she's been cleared, which is the most important thing for her. The CAS hearing was her biggest victory in all the time she'd been waiting to appear there to defend herself", Cahill reacted.
