Cazaux emerges victorious from the marathon of the day at Wimbledon!
Arthur Cazaux had to battle for 4 hours and 34 minutes to defeat Zizou Bergs in the first round of Wimbledon. The Frenchman was leading two sets to nil (6-1, 6-4) after just under an hour and a half's play on the grass of Court 4. But the Belgian qualifier was not to be denied. He won each of the next two sets in a tie-break to take his opponent into a decisive 5th set.
The two players were evenly matched until the super tie-break (played over 10 points instead of 7). The Frenchman then largely relaxed, leading 7-0 then 8-2, and we thought he was heading for a fairly quiet conclusion. But he wasn't out of the woods yet. Once again, Bergs didn't let up and completely reversed the momentum to level the score (8-8).
Cazaux then showed his mental toughness to win his opponent's service point (9-8) and close out the match with a good first serve. This was his first Wimbledon match and he will face Alexander Bublik in the second round.
