Cornet Withdraws in Quarterfinals at La Bisbal d’Emporda
For her comeback tournament after nearly a year away, Alizé Cornet competed at the WTA 125 event in La Bisbal d’Emporda, Catalonia. After victories against Irene Burillo Escorihuela (6-1, 6-2) and Susan Bandecchi (3-6, 6-4, 7-5), the 35-year-old Frenchwoman reached the quarterfinals.
Facing Hungary’s Dalma Galfi, ranked 159th in the world, Cornet hoped to advance to the semifinals, but things did not go as planned.
Perhaps fatigued from her efforts the previous day, the former world No. 11 failed to win a single game. Galfi, clinical on break points (5/5 converted), quickly took control.
Ultimately, Cornet retired midway through the second set (6-0, 3-0 ret.). Next, she is expected to compete at the WTA 250 tournament in Rouen in mid-April, followed by the qualifying rounds for the WTA 1000 events in Madrid and Rome to conclude her clay-court season.
