De Minaur stuns Medvedev to reach the quarter-finals at Roland-Garros!
We didn't expect him to be so strong, at least not at Roland-Garros. Alex De Minaur played a complete match, taking advantage of a very disappointing Daniil Medvedev to book his place in the quarter-finals (4-6, 6-2, 6-1, 6-3 in 2h50).
It's no surprise to see the Australian performing so well. Accustomed to playing second fiddle, he is enjoying the best season of his life this year. Qualifying for the quarter-finals, he scored his 29th win of the season (in 38 matches). What's more, he has just notched up his 7th victory over a Top 15 player, and 4th against a Top 10 player. Despite being known to be rather uncomfortable on ochre, the 25-year-old reached his second clay-court quarter-final of the season (after Monte-Carlo, where he was beaten by Djokovic).
In a match between two players rather febrile on crushed bricks, the Australian was the more combative. Adapting better and better to the surface, he blew away a very inconsistent Medvedev (27 winners, 42 unforced errors). Never missing a chance, he stuck to his line, offering prodigious court coverage. Not hesitating to be aggressive (51 winners, 40 unforced errors), it was only logical that he should win in less than 3 hours.
Having broken into the world's top 10 for the first time a few weeks ago, his Paris tournament will enable him to get back there (he's ranked 11th this week). That said, the step may prove a little too high in the next round. For a place in the semi-finals, he will face the winner of the match between Zverev and Rune. Two players much more at ease on clay.
