Defending finalist Jarry eliminates Gaston in the first round in Rome
Nicolas Jarry has a lot at stake in this Rome tournament. As last year’s finalist, the Chilean will have to defend his points, even if the mission won’t be easy. Jarry, who has been dealing with a foot injury in recent weeks, needs to quickly regain his form to make another deep run in the Italian capital.
In the first round, the world No. 53 faced Hugo Gaston. In the end, a single break in the second set was enough for Jarry, who won in straight sets (7-6, 6-4). The Frenchman, who called for the physio early in the second set due to an abdominal injury, couldn’t recover from the break deficit.
The Chilean, who risks dropping out of the top 100 if he underperforms early in the tournament (he currently sits at No. 145 in the ATP Live rankings), is nevertheless moving forward and will face one of the in-form players of the early season, Francisco Cerundolo, for a spot in the round of 16. As for Gaston, this marks his 15th defeat in 2025.
