Dimitrov Forced to Retire at Wimbledon, Uncertain for US Open

Spectators at Centre Court experienced a strange evening this Monday during the Wimbledon round of 16. World No. 1 and heavy favorite Jannik Sinner was caught off guard by the precision of Grigor Dimitrov’s game, which caused him significant trouble.

The 2017 ATP Finals winner even took a 2-0 set lead but was forced to retire early in the third set. After clutching his pectoral muscle following a serve, Dimitrov called for the physio but was unable to continue. The 34-year-old, currently ranked 21st in the world, has now retired in his last five Grand Slam appearances.

In tears as he left the court after the match, Dimitrov is aware of the severity of his injury. As confirmed by his manager, Georgi Stoimenov, the Bulgarian is believed to have suffered a partial tear in his pectoral muscle.

This injury will likely sideline him for the two North American Masters 1000 events in Toronto and Cincinnati. Dimitrov hopes to recover in time for the US Open, but his participation in the season’s final Grand Slam remains uncertain for now.
