Doha 2024: Mensik's poignant tribute to Monfils after stunning semifinal
On February 23, 2024, young Jakub Mensik (18) upset French tennis legend Gaël Monfils to reach his first ATP final. On court, the battle was fierce (6-4, 1-6, 6-3); at the net, an emotional nod sealed a rare moment of respect and passing of the torch.
The Czech started confidently. He imposed his rhythm, dictated the rallies, found the angles. Score: 6-4 in his favor. But the Frenchman didn't give up. The 2nd set was nearly dominated from start to finish (6-1), allowing Monfils to level the match.
The third set was tense, punctuated by breaks and engaging comebacks. Monfils tried to push Mensik to his limits. At 3-3, the Frenchman had his chances, but the Czech, with impressive composure, pulled away to win the match (6-4, 1-6, 6-3).
The victory was there. The surprise too. Mensik is now the youngest finalist in the history of the Doha tournament. Afterwards, viewers witnessed a moment of respect between a junior and his senior:
Mensik: "You were one of my biggest inspirations when I was younger. I used to watch you on TV."
Monfils: "It was a pleasure. Good luck in tomorrow's final."
