Ferrer on Alcaraz: "If you expect him to win every tournament, it's impossible"
In the coming days, the ATP 500 tournament in Barcelona will take place on the Catalan clay courts. Former professional player until 2019 and now the tournament director, David Ferrer gave an interview to *Mundo Deportivo* in which he discussed Carlos Alcaraz.
The latter is set to play the semifinals of the Monte-Carlo Masters 1000 this Saturday afternoon against his compatriot and friend Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, following a mixed start to the season.
"Carlos lost early in Miami. We’re not used to that with him. As a former professional player, I know how hard it is to win all the time, and I understand that extra pressure.
If I speak more from a fan’s perspective, if you expect Alcaraz to win every tournament, it’s impossible. We’re talking about a sport where it’s very difficult to be the best every year.
The important thing is that we enjoy watching him play. Carlos is a special player. He’s of the same caliber as Rafa Nadal, and Rafa didn’t win everything either.
How many times have I heard, when Rafa was injured, that he’d never come back—and yet he often returned stronger than ever, as a better player.
The season is very long, there are ups and downs, and I think Carlos is on the right path. The clay-court swing is coming, and I see him maturing in his statements, which I really liked, about the pressure he’s felt. He’s accepting things.
We’ll be able to enjoy him for many years," said Ferrer, who is also the captain of the Spanish Davis Cup team.
