Fils beats Zverev in 3.5 hours to win his 1st ATP 500 in Hamburg!
Arthur Fils has just put in a first-rate performance, defeating Alexander Zverev in the final of the ATP 500 Hamburg. He beat the world No. 4, playing in front of his home crowd, after a tremendous three-and-a-half-hour battle (6-3, 3-6, 7-6 [1]).
The Frenchman played a very big match, finishing with an impressive ratio of 41 winners to 17 unforced errors (23-19 for Zverev), and even 22 winners to 9 unforced errors in the 3rd set alone. He was also extremely solid mentally on key points, saving 21 break points out of 22.
The tension was palpable at the end of the match, and the German, probably dejected at the number of chances he missed, finished in a very bad mood, as evidenced by his icy handshake after the match point.
At just 20 years of age, Fils has secured the biggest title of his young career, his 2nd after winning the ATP 250 in Lyon in 2023, also on clay.
