Fils ends Sousa's career at Estoril
Arthur Fils has just qualified for the second round of the ATP 250 Estoril tournament. Seeded n°5 in the draw, he dominated Portugal's Joao Sousa, invited by the organizers and playing the last match of his career in front of his home crowd.
The Frenchman won in 1 hour 48 minutes and two sets (7-5, 6-4). Very solid on serve, he held his ground with authority, and is now regaining some confidence after some rather disappointing results in recent weeks.
Fils will be looking to confirm his renewed form this Thursday, when he takes on a Christian Garin who is also in search of his best form.
Sousa, 35, brings to an end a 16-year career that took him up to 28th in the world (2016). He also won 4 ATP titles (Kuala Lumpur 2013, Valencia 2015, Estoril 2018, Pune 2022) and twice reached the last 16 in Grand Slam events (US Open 2018, Wimbledon 2019).
