In his first match in a Grand Slam main draw, Joao Fonseca eliminated Andrey Rublev in three short sets, 7-6, 6-3, 7-6.
Unimpressed, the Brazilian delivered a remarkable performance to eliminate the n°9 seed, aged just 18.
He declared in a post-match interview: "I enjoyed these moments on this incredible court.
I love playing, and I'd like to thank this incredible crowd. There were a lot of Brazilians supporting me.
I concentrated on my game, without putting any pressure on myself, even though I was playing a top 10."
He will face Lorenzo Sonego, who eliminated Stanislas Wawrinka, in the second round. At the end of the tournament, Fonseca will be in the top 100.
