Fred Stolle, Australian tennis legend, has passed away at the age of 86

Australian tennis is in mourning. This Wednesday, March 5, Fred Stolle passed away at the age of 86. A former professional player, he won two Grand Slam titles before the start of the Open Era, at Roland-Garros in 1965 against Tony Roche and the 1966 US Open against John Newcombe.

In total, he reached the final of eight Grand Slams. In addition to his victories in Paris and New York, Stolle also lost two finals at the Australian Open against Roy Emerson in 1964 and 1965, three others at Wimbledon in 1963, 1964, and 1965, and before triumphing at the US Open, he had also stumbled at the final hurdle against the same Roy Emerson in 1964.

In his career, Fred Stolle also won the Davis Cup three times with Australia, in 1964, 1965, and 1966. He was inducted into the Tennis Hall of Fame in 1985. Tennis Australia announced the sad news of his passing on its social media.

"A Grand Slam champion on the court, a voice in the commentary box, and forever a legend in our hearts," can be read on X (formerly Twitter).

"When we talk about Australia's golden generation and the transition from amateur to professional tennis, Fred Stolle's name is right at the top with the best.

Fred was a key member of the Australian Davis Cup team and made significant contributions to the sport after his brilliant career, as a coach and then as a knowledgeable commentator.

His legacy is one of excellence, dedication, and a deep love for tennis. His impact on the sport will remain etched in the memory of all those who had the privilege of witnessing his achievements.

Our thoughts and deepest sympathies go out to Fred's family and friends during this sad time," said Craig Tiley, director of the Australian Open.
