Garcia enters the main draw at Indian Wells after Vondrousova's withdrawal
Lacking confidence, Caroline Garcia has not had a successful start to the season. Defeated in the first round of the Australian Open by Naomi Osaka after a several-month break from the tour, the 31-year-old Frenchwoman, ranked 70th in the world, has only won one match in 2025.
That victory came in the first round of the WTA 1000 in Doha, where she defeated Yuan Yue (6-1, 7-6). Otherwise, she was eliminated early in Abu Dhabi by Lulu Sun and in Dubai by Marketa Vondrousova.
However, Garcia received some good news. Due to the withdrawal of Vondrousova from the WTA 1000 in Indian Wells, the former world No. 4, who was initially set to compete in the qualifying rounds, has now been directly entered into the main draw.
Already absent in Melbourne, Vondrousova, who triumphed at Wimbledon in 2023, has struggled to maintain momentum. Eliminated in the first round in Doha by Elina Svitolina, the Czech player was defeated by the eventual champion in Dubai, Mirra Andreeva, in the second round.
Last year, Vondrousova had to withdraw before her third-round match against Marta Kostyuk in California. As for Garcia, she faces a crucial March and will need to defend a significant number of points during the Sunshine Double.
Defeated in the third round at Indian Wells by Maria Sakkari in 2024, she reached the quarterfinals in Miami against Danielle Collins but will need to perform well in the next two tournaments to avoid dropping out of the top 100, which would be a first for her since June 2013.
