Gasquet dominates Atmane and prolongs the pleasure at Roland-Garros
Richard Gasquet will bid farewell to the professional tennis world during this Roland-Garros tournament.
But the Frenchman, aged 38, will not bow out today. As a wild card recipient, Gasquet drew his compatriot Terence Atmane in the first round.
The match started ideally for the older of the two players, with the first set won 6-2 in half an hour of play. The contest then balanced out, and Atmane, also invited by the organizers, managed to take control of the game to secure the second set with an identical score.
It was in the middle of the third set that the match swung in favor of Gasquet. Atmane indeed suffered from cramps and logically conceded this set before taking a 6-0 loss in the fourth set.
Gasquet thus won 6-2, 2-6, 6-3, 6-0 in a little over two hours of play. In the second round, and for what could be the last match of his illustrious career, he may face world No.1 Jannik Sinner, who will be making his debut tonight against Arthur Rinderknech.
