Gauff Crowned After a Grand Finale at Roland-Garros
Sabalenka faced Gauff in the Roland-Garros final. The two players were perfectly even in their head-to-head record (5-5), but the American held the advantage in Grand Slam finals (1-0). However, this year, the Belarusian had defeated the world No. 2 to claim the WTA 1000 Madrid title.
After a thunderous start to lead 4-1, Sabalenka hit a major rough patch, losing her service games—highlighted by several questionable decisions. She was caught up (4-4) in a scenario reminiscent of her previous match against defending champion Swiatek.
The crowd rode a rollercoaster of emotions, epitomized by a grueling 12-minute game at 5-4 on Sabalenka’s serve. Gauff saved two set points with sensational defense, leveled the score, and forced a tie-break. Down 3-0, and after titanic exchanges, Sabalenka displayed ice-cold composure to clinch an exceptional first set lasting 1 hour and 17 minutes.
The second set, however, swung in favor of the 2022 finalist. Gauff was more solid on her first serves (72%) and committed far fewer unforced errors (7 compared to 16 in the previous set). This was evident as she converted three out of four break points, taking the set 6-2.
A US Open champion at just 19, Gauff once again showcased remarkable maturity to secure her first Roland-Garros title with a 6-7, 6-2, 6-4 victory over an erratic Sabalenka (who committed over 60 unforced errors in the match). She also avenged her 2022 loss and now boasts two Grand Slam titles at just 21.
As for Sabalenka, this marked her third Grand Slam final defeat after Australia 2025 and the US Open 2023—each time against Americans. She could have become the only active player on tour to win three of the four Grand Slam tournaments.
