Griekspoor, tombeur de Zverev à Indian Wells : « Je suis incroyablement fier de moi »
Tallon Griekspoor achieved one of the biggest performances of this early season on the ATP tour. After seeing Alexander Zverev serve for the match in the second set, Griekspoor turned the situation around and eventually defeated the world number 2 (4-6, 7-6, 7-6) on his sixth match point.
This also marks the very first victory for the 28-year-old Dutchman against a top 5 player, after losing his first 18 encounters against the highest-ranked players on the ATP tour.
Following his inaugural victory against Miomir Kecmanovic, the semi-finalist of the ATP 500 tournament in Dubai in recent days confirmed his form with a prestigious win against the German and will face Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard for a spot in the round of 16.
Meanwhile, Griekspoor, ranked 43rd in the world, expressed his pride in a press conference after eliminating Zverev from the Californian tournament.
"It was a mental battle. I lost five times against him last year and was heartbroken at Roland Garros when I had a double break lead in the fifth set. I've played so many battles against him and had opportunities, but they all turned in his favor.
I am incredibly proud of myself for this performance and for managing to cross the finish line. I've had ankle issues since the first match here and didn't know how it would go today.
I felt like it was quite hot, but in the end, we played for over three hours. I am proud of myself, of my mental and physical performance," assured the Dutchman for the ATP website, who got his revenge on Zverev after losing to the same player at Indian Wells last year.
