Humbert disappoints and falls to Borges in Montreal!
Ugo Humbert was back to his best on Thursday, falling in the second round of the Montreal tournament to Portugal's Nuno Borges (3-6, 7-6, 7-6).
And yet, the opportunity was sublime for the French No. 1.
Following the successive eliminations of Tsitsipas and Medvedev, the field was wide open and the Tricolore could easily have set his sights on a Canadian semi-final.
In the end, however, Humbert fell back into his old ways, committing far too many unforced errors, particularly on important points (39).
Borges, on the other hand, was content to defend his baseline body and soul and give very little away.
As a result, the world number 43 will meet Nishikori in a round-of-16 encounter that is atypical, to say the least!
