Medvedev falls at the start in Montreal!
Sometimes it's better not to get ahead of yourself.
Daniil Medvedev explained that he was back to playing conditions that suited his game perfectly, but he was sent tumbling out of the tournament in his very first match in Toronto.
Up against an Alejandro Davidovich Fokina who was as feisty and combative as ever, the Russian lacked precision and bite, and was probably not yet fit enough. Faced with the Spaniard's tenacity, he finally gave in, losing in 3 sets and 2 hours (6-4, 1-6, 6-2).
While not a bad match, Medvedev's disappointing performance continues his title-less season.
Opposite him, Davidovich Fokina scored a major success and will now face the winner of the match between Khachanov and Arnaldi for a place in the quarter-finals.
