The Australian Open 2026 quarterfinal between Coco Gauff and Elina Svitolina did not go the American's way (6-1, 6-2 defeat).

Completely dominated and powerless, the world No. 3 never seemed able to compete against a solid and inspired opponent.

“Nothing worked for me today”: Gauff’s statement

Visibly shaken, Coco Gauff offered no excuses or pretense when analyzing her performance.

“I did everything wrong, I have no answers. Elina played an excellent match and I never managed to reach her level.

I was making errors on my forehand, backhand, return… Nothing worked for me today.

After the first set, I was convinced I could bounce back. And I find myself down 0-3… At that moment, none of my playing qualities were there.

I started with the usual tension, but I had doubts because of the roof. I felt like the ball was coming slower than usual.

That’s not the main reason for my poor performance. I tried to change my sensations, but I prefer to stay vague on that point.

I need to learn to win matches even when I’m playing badly. And my serve can help me in those moments.

I’m on the right track. It’s not yet where I want to be, but I’m serving better than last year.

I need to make my second serve more reliable but my aggressiveness on the first is more consistent,” she said, as reported by Punto de Break.

As much as I love watching Alcaraz at his best, I'd love to see Alex taking this, he's such a tryer, and getting married and his humour and humility...

Favoritism?

Last year: Sinner seed 1, the organizers schedule Alcaraz on day 1, Sinner on day 2.

This year: Alcaraz seed 1, the organizers schedule Alcaraz on day 1, Sinner on day 3.

That means: 7 matches in 15 days for Alcaraz, 7 in 13 days for Sinner; and no rest day for Sinner between quarter and semis, 1 full day rest for Alcaraz.

Also, on the first very hot day, the organizers schedule Sinner...
