"I don't have that countdown in my head yet," Djokovic confirms his desire to keep playing
Retirement is not on Novak Djokovic's mind. The 38-year-old Serb, who is playing in the Athens tournament this week, confirmed his intentions to continue competing at the highest level.
Djokovic is still performing at 38. The world No. 5, who won his 100th career title in Geneva this season, reached the semi-finals of all Grand Slam tournaments in 2025 and even played in the final of the Miami Masters 1000 against Jakub Mensik earlier this year.
Present in Athens after having qualified for the ATP Finals in Turin, the former world No. 1 was once again questioned about a possible upcoming retirement. Once again, Djokovic confirmed that he does not plan to end his career in the near future.
"I have thought about my future more than once, that's for sure. But I refuse to talk about it for now. I want to enjoy the moments on the court like the one I experienced in Athens.
I believe I have earned the right to play for as long as I wish. They very often ask Stan (Wawrinka) the same question about retirement, and I completely agree with him when he says: 'Leave me alone, let me play and enjoy.'
I understand people's curiosity about when I will stop, but I don't have that countdown in my head yet. I have decided to play as I see fit, as I intend to, and not the way people want me to. That's all," Djokovic thus stated to Tennis Up To Date.
