I had told the referee I only needed 60 seconds," Shelton reacts to his swift victory at Wimbledon
Furious when the supervisor announced the match interruption at 5-4 in the third set (due to lighting issues) last night, Shelton had to return the next day to finish his second-round Wimbledon match against Hijikata.
After just 70 seconds, the world No. 10 wrapped up the match in straight sets (6-2, 7-5, 6-4). Asked about this unusual victory, the American responded in the press conference:
"For me, there’s a difference between playing over two days and coming back for just 55 seconds today. I was maybe hoping to hit a few baseline shots, but I might have to go to the practice courts for that. I’m sorry you didn’t get to see much tennis."
The 22-year-old even shared a funny anecdote about when the referee explained the night before that Hawkeye had only five minutes of operation left:
"He told me there wouldn’t be enough time to finish the game. I said to him, 'I only need 60 seconds.'
