Tonight, Venus Williams made her return to competition in Washington against Peyton Stearns.

After her win, the American legend was asked about her comeback and whether she was happy to prove people wrong about her return.

She replied: "I'm only here for myself, and I have nothing to prove. I'm here because I want to be here.

Wanting to prove something, or prove someone wrong, has never brought me victory in my career, nor defeat.

No one will work for me; I’m the one handling it, so I don’t care what others say, because it won’t stop the work I’m doing right now.

No one will hinder my faith; even if people say unbelievable things about me, it won’t help me win matches either. I’m trying to focus on myself and think of nothing else.
