I thought I might never play without pain again," admits Vondrousova
Marketa Vondrousova underwent surgery on her left shoulder in 2024, an injury that ended her season shortly after Roland-Garros.
Returning in 2025, the Czech player admits she had doubts: "I started training again two or three months after the surgery (in early fall 2024). And the pain came back.
That was the hardest part—it wasn’t good, even after the surgery. You have to come back every time, so in my head, I kept wondering: ‘Can I do this again? Can I compete with these girls?’.
I feel like you never really know. The pain returned, and I realized I couldn’t play like that. So we had to stop and do a lot of rehab exercises.
It was exhausting to do that twice a day without tennis. So I had to stay positive. I always believed I could play again.
But in my mind, I kept asking: Will this ever stop, and will I come back? I thought I might never play without pain again.
