If it's an outdoor tournament, you have to be ready to play in the heat," says Pegula
Playing conditions at the Shanghai and Wuhan tournaments continue to draw reactions. The heat and humidity are making life difficult for the players.
In Wuhan, the roof was closed to try to mitigate the heat. Jessica Pegula, who won her third-round match this Thursday, spoke about the situation.
"I think the roof situation obviously helped. It was extremely humid today. Honestly, the heat didn't bother me at all. It was just very humid.
So I was sweating a lot, but having a bit of shade, I think, really helps. The heat is part of the conditions and part of our sport.
I also think that many of these tournaments now have roofs, and they close them halfway. Then you wonder if it's an indoor or outdoor tournament.
It can get a bit confusing when conditions can change drastically based on a tournament simply deciding they want shade for the fans.
Sometimes, I don't necessarily think that's always the right thing to do, or maybe totally fair either, because at the same time, you know, if it's an outdoor tournament, you have to be ready to play in the heat.
If there's a rule about heat and it's way too hot and the safety of kids, ball persons, and players is compromised, then it should be enforced 100%. And you have to wait for the situation to improve.
