"I'm writing history for myself," Sinner reflects on his place in Italian tennis history
After another impressive performance, Sinner claimed the trophy at the legendary Wimbledon tournament, becoming the first Italian to achieve this feat. During the press conference, he spoke about his relationship with Italian tennis:
"I’ve certainly won tournaments that Italy was missing. But I’m writing history for myself, you know. I don’t ask myself whether I’m the first Italian to do this or that—I think for myself. That doesn’t mean I don’t think about Italy.
In fact, I’m just happy, I feel lucky to be Italian. And in my opinion, I’ve always said that Italy deserved many, many great things. I’m happy to be part of this history, but there’s still a lot to do."
For context, Sinner now holds more Grand Slam singles titles than all other Italian men combined.
