"It took me a little time to adjust to the surface," Swiatek reflects on her first grass-court match this season
Iga Swiatek made her debut on Tuesday at the WTA 500 tournament in Bad Homburg. The Polish player, who dropped to 8th in the world rankings after her semifinal loss at Roland-Garros to Aryna Sabalenka, is looking to regain confidence before Wimbledon.
On the German grass courts, Swiatek—a quarterfinalist at the London Grand Slam two years ago—defeated Victoria Azarenka in the round of 16 (6-4, 6-4). Before playing her quarterfinal match this Thursday against Ekaterina Alexandrova, Swiatek discussed her early grass-court performances in 2025.
"It took me a little time to adjust to the surface, but I think I showed a very high level from the first few games. I had a few chances to break her early, but I couldn’t capitalize on them.
Maybe at that point, I dropped my intensity a bit, but I managed to bounce back. In the end, even though I don’t think it was a great match from me, you still have to remember it was my first match on grass.
Very often, getting a first-round 'bye' in these kinds of tournaments isn’t good news because what we want is to play as many matches as possible on the surface. That’s also why I’m happy with the win," Swiatek explained to Punto De Break.
