"It's not a joke," Fernandez's unusual social media post ahead of the Montreal tournament
A US Open finalist in 2021, Leylah Fernandez has struggled to maintain that status in major tournaments since then, reaching Grand Slam quarterfinals only once after her New York final four years ago (at Roland-Garros in 2022). Despite this, she currently holds the 35th spot in the WTA rankings.
The 22-year-old Canadian left-hander has won three titles on the main tour and is now preparing for the WTA 1000 in Montreal, held in her home country. For the occasion, Fernandez posted an unusual message on her social media, announcing her intention to go on a 'date' in the Canadian city.
"I’m not a big fan of dating apps. So, I’m going to do things my way. I plan to go on a one-hour date in Montreal. If you’re interested, send me a private message and tell me about yourself. See you there!
It’ll be fun, right? This is not a joke. I fully intend to go on a date in Montreal, so go ahead, send me a DM. PS: You might have to meet my dad first (good luck with that)," reads Leylah Fernandez's Instagram post.
